How to Convert Tons to BTUs (and vice versa)

To convert BTUs to Tons, divide the BTUs by 12,000.

What Is a BTU? BTU Meaning for Air Conditioners

BTU stands for British thermal unit, and it is a unit of heat. The BTU definition is simple: one BTU is the heat needed to warm one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. That is about the heat of one wooden kitchen match burned to the end. It is a small amount, which is why air conditioners are rated in thousands of them.

So what does BTU mean on an air conditioner? It is the amount of heat the unit can take out of your room in one hour. Two more labels turn up on furnaces and commercial equipment. MBH means thousands of BTU per hour, so 60 MBH is 60,000 BTU/hr, or 5 tons. And listings often shorten the number with a k: 24k BTU is 24,000 BTU, which is 2 tons, and 48k BTU is 4 tons.

Every conversion on this page comes down to one number: 1 ton of air conditioning equals exactly 12,000 BTU per hour. Not roughly 12,000. Exactly 12,000. So the math never changes: multiply tons by 12,000 to get BTUs, or divide BTUs by 12,000 to get tons. 15,000 BTU to Tons

15,000 BTU equals 1.25 tons. Common for large window units and mid-size portables meant for open living areas.

18,000 BTU to Tons
